Yard Piping Condition Assessment Contract Awarded

The City of Sunnyvale recently awarded a $1 million contract to V&A Consulting Engineers for a Yard Piping Condition Assessment at the Sunnyvale Water Pollution Control Plant (Plant), as a component of the Sunnyvale Cleanwater Program. This new assessment will evaluate the current condition of the existing pipes — all mains, valves, and any other fittings not on the public way — including those related to the Plant’s water, wastewater, gas, secondary and tertiary facilities.

The results of this current assessment will not only inform the prioritization process evaluating what requires immediate attention, those that can be addressed later, and provide a cost analysis for both but also contributes to the development of future deliverables as part of the ongoing Master Plan Update. Currently being updated, the Master Plan for the Plant will include developing a specific yard piping improvement and rehabilitation project based on the results of this upcoming assessment. In 2019, a condition assessment of the secondary and tertiary facilities and the influent sewer pipelines was completed, which resulted in extensive repairs on the western side of the Plant.

In addition, the purpose of the yard piping evaluation is to compile data to confirm the pipe assets of various types are in good condition and are unlikely to break in the near future. Any pipes not in a state of good repair will be flagged for repair or replacement as part of a future project. The scope of work includes desktop data collection, risk-based prioritization of assets to be inspected, detailed work planning (including inspection methods and logistics), field condition assessment, presentation of findings and recommendations for rehabilitation or replacement, including budgetary costs.

Proposals for this contract opened on Sept. 20, 2023.

The City awarded the condition assessment contract on Jan. 9, 2024, and work started in February 2024. Project completion is expected in mid-2025.
