Caribbean Drive Project Wins Second Coveted Industry Award
The Caribbean Drive Parking and Trail Access Enhancements Project (Caribbean Drive Project) continues to gain recognition and received its second industry award this year, being recognized by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) San Francisco Section as the 2022 Outstanding Bikeways & Trails Project. ASCE San Francisco Section Project Awards recognize outstanding civil engineering projects in the San Francisco geographic area. This specific award recognizes projects whose primary focus is on improvement of or the implementation of new bikeways and/or multi-use trails (pedestrians and bicycles) that improve and promote community connectivity and encourage non-motorized transportation.
The Caribbean Drive Project improved bicycle and pedestrian access to the Bay Trail and added bioretention rain gardens planted with native species. It demonstrated the integration of ecological stewardship with low-impact stormwater treatment, and improved a recreational amenity within the revitalizing Moffett Park neighborhood. Additionally, the project achieved its goals of:
Increasing the amount of parking spaces in the area on Caribbean Drive to replace parking currently located on Carl Road (including ADA accessible spaces).
Making additional space surrounding the Plant available for renovation work, so the Plant can continue providing reliable wastewater treatment services for decades to come.
In addition to the extensive public and ecological benefits, the project was completed $281k under budget.
