Construction Contract Awarded for Secondary Treatment and Dewatering Project

The City has awarded a contract to Walsh Construction Company for Sunnyvale Cleanwater Program’s Secondary Treatment and Dewatering Project (Main Package). The purpose of the project is to improve various components of the treatment process to meet anticipated future regulatory requirements. This project will build conventional activated sludge facilities, which will be the main method to provide secondary treatment. The existing ponds, air flotation tanks, and fixed growth reactors will remain in service to augment the new facilities during periods of high flow. Once new facilities are constructed, a thickening and dewatering facility will be needed to handle the additional biosolids generated. Solids-handling equipment will be housed in a new building and the ventilated air will be treated by an odor control system.

Bids opened Aug. 24, 2022 and the City received three, responsive and responsible contractor bids.

In order to ensure a competitive bidding pool, the City conducted an extensive contractor outreach effort to meet with interested contractors to describe the scope of work, hear and address concerns. Engineering design documents were also provided to allow contractors to review the project scope prior to the bidding period.

The City has awarded the construction contract for the Secondary Treatment and Dewatering Project with building to begin in 2023.

The Secondary Treatment and Dewatering Project (Main Package) project is part of the City’s long-term capital improvement program to renovate the Plant and provide reliable wastewater service for future generations.

The 90% design drawings of the Secondary Treatment and Dewatering Project (Main Package) and the 100% design drawings of the Existing Plant Rehabilitation Project (Main Package) can be downloaded from the Projects page.
