EPA Announces $220 Million to the City of Sunnyvale
On November 10, 2020, EPA announces nearly $500 million for water infrastructure projects in Northern California, of which $220 million will go to help finance the Sunnyvale Cleanwater Program. EPA’s Water Infrastructure and Financing Innovation Act (WIFIA) loan is a federal credit program to help improve wastewater management while benefiting public health, water quality, and the environment.
The WIFIA loan will finance upgrades to multiple projects of the Sunnyvale Cleanwater Program: Existing Plant Rehabilitation Project, Secondary Treatment & Dewatering Project and Cleanwater Center. Improvements to the existing secondary and tertiary treatment facilities, construction of new secondary and biosolids handling facilities, and reconstruction of the support facilities are necessary to improve water quality and to meet anticipated future regulatory requirements. These upgrades will also protect water quality in the San Francisco Bay and will improve the plant’s energy efficiency and biosolids processing. More information on these projects can be found on the Projects page.
The WIFIA loan will save the City of Sunnyvale an estimated $160 million, which saves the Sunnyvale ratepayers money. Project construction and operation are expected to create 1,800 jobs.
