Horizons: Doubling Down at the Plant

Bryan Berdeen, Plant Operations Manager at the Sunnyvale Water Pollution Control Plant (Plant), knows a lot about rebuilding a plane while flying it. The Plant he manages protects the San Francisco Bay by collecting and cleaning wastewater 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. No day off for this Plant!

While operating every day and providing continuous service to its customers, the City is also undertaking a long-term improvement program to renovate and rebuild aging facilities at the Plant through a series of projects and upgrades. In addition, some existing facilities must be decommissioned and demolished to create space for the new facilities. The project spans over the next 25 years, making it the largest capital improvement project in the City’s history. Find out what it is like operating and upgrading a highly complex industrial facility that you can’t shut down in our new edition of Horizon’s magazine.
